We left Sandsbridge beach at 7:00 am not knowing where we were going. We just drove south on some road that took us to a ferry into North Carolina...sweet!
We were on a mission to the Outer Banks, wherever they were. It turns out the barrier islands of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head are the Outer Banks, just in case you find yourself confused looking for them on a map like we were.
We eventually found a campground, but had to fix a little shit tank problem before arrival.
There we were in Wal Mart, buying beer and fixing the shitter, laughing at the situation.
As we pulled into the RV park, I jokingly said to Clay "Welcome to SunnyVale" and made jokes about paying our lot fees to Mr.Lahey. This park, although safe, was not as manicured as the other parks we stayed in. I'm also pretty sure a shifty couple tried to sell us stolen rib eye steaks(really, they did! I wish I wish i was making this up).
But we do have a private beach with the biggest surf we have seen so far, and there is a cool surfing vibe to the park!
On our way into Kitty Hawk we stopped at huge farmers market and got a bunch freshly picked produce. Sweet corn, apples and toasted tomato sandwichs are gonna fill our bellies for the next two days.
On Monday night we decided to go for dinner at a restaurant that Clay remembers from when he was a little kid. We walked down the main road of Kitty Hawk towards Kill Devil Hills, a distance of 2 miles. We stopped at a beer, cheese, and wine shop that does promotional tastings of all their products. They need stores like this in Toronto. Great concept....Go sit at a bar and try one of hundreds of beers and then buy a case to take home, with some local cheese too!! Amazing!!
We made it to Awful Arthurs Oyster bar, the restaurant, and found some seats at the bar. We started with a half dozen oysters from James River VA. they were really good, and really fresh. Hurricane Irene has done a number on oysters and other seafood industries on the east coast, a lot of fisherman are moving south. Oh well so are we!!!
Second we had their amazing shrimp and crab bisque. Soooo creamy and delicious with a hint of cayenne. Really nice!
We went on to split a seafood platter that included soft shell crab, fresh shrimp and scallops sauteed in butter. Everything was perfectly done and we enjoyed every bite.
We drank Awful Ale brewed by St. georges brewery in VA. and Kona Firerock pale ale. The Kona Pale ale was really good and the awful ale was average.
All in all an amazing meal!
We made it back to the RV for an early bedtime so we could continue our journey south early in the a.m.
Did Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar's menu still have Crab Balls? When you were 8, you could not stop laughing because you did not know that crabs had balls.
